● rabab ou rebab nom masculin (arabe rabāba) Instrument de musique à cordes frottées ou pincées du type violon ou luth utilisé au Maghreb ou en Asie.

MUS. Instrument de formes variées, à une, deux ou trois cordes frottées (dans le monde arabe et l'Asie du sud-est), à cordes pincées (en Afghanistan et aux Indes) (d'apr. Mus. 1976). Le rebab monté d'une seule corde « rebab-ech-châér » (rebab de poète) [ainsi nommé par les Arabes] parce que le musicien qui s'en sert pour accompagner le narrateur (...) soutient toujours le même son, pour empêcher la voix de changer d'intonation (GRILLET, Ancêtres violon, t. 1, 1901, p. 283). Le rebec (...) provient très certainement du rabâb arabe (Encyclop. univ. t. 20 1975, p. 1605).
